The Reformers And Their Stepchildren
(First published in 1964)The failure of the Protestant world to grasp the history and meaning of the Reformation which changed the world over four hundred years ago. The stepchildren of the Reformation were called many things by the Reformers: Donatists, staff-carriers, heretics, sacrament Arians, Winckler (those who gather in a Winckel, or secluded place for religious exercises), Anabaptists, communists, and agitators. The author devotes a chapter to each aspect of Anabaptist faith and life suggested by these terms of reproach. The rift between them and the Reformers, writes the author, "was the result of a problem that perennially besets the Church of Christ, the problem of how to relate that Church to its environment." Little by little, step by step, item by item, Protestantism has, at least in the New World, come to endorse the very emphasis these men pioneered.
